Three semi-detached houses replaced an existing villa in a quiet suburb. The context was delicate and unremarkable at the same time. Due to the topography of the plot, a bit of drama could be developed between the somewhat wild nature of the rocky site and the calm cubes of the added volumes. Each volume contains two dwellings. The inherent symmetry is expressed and expanded so that each façade has a symmetric composition, and that over every corner symmetrical facades clash and create a free effect. The division of the facades into strong horizontal bands and vertical elements pronounce the windows as being generated by the building elements and therefore a function of their composition. Between the calm and ordered building volumes and the sculptural qualities of the exposed rock, a free but violent juxtaposition takes place. The buildings

Hermansson Hiller Lundberg - Myttinge house, Värmdö 2017. Photos © Mikael Olsson. The brief was simple enough, a summer house in bucolic surroundings half an hour from Stockholm. From that innocuous starting point we sought out a relationship to the richly green nature based on tension. We worked with scale, order and monumentality to pursue a reserved and self-contained architectonic expression based on the theme of the remote. Monumental expression in individual building elements creates unusual effects when used in small-scale and domestic settings. The dark broad piers of the exterior order the facades on all sides. Their zigzaggy wooden surfaces, a play on the fluted pilaster, enliven the expression with a slender, upwardly quality. The cornice crowning the facades is very slim, resulting in an ambiguous trabeation, where there is no load-bearing taking place.
