“Both projects, in a way, result from our research into the potential of novel interpretations of concepts related to informal space and unconventional social relations typical of the countercultural movements in the late 1960s,” explains designer Sven Jonke, from the Numen/For Use collective.

The Pixel Collection Takes After Its Namesake

Designed by Ramón Esteve, the inspiration is clear as soon as you read the name. Just as colored pixels can be configured any number of ways, so can the various elements of The Pixel collection.

Pixel features a low seating height that’s perfect for delving into intimate conversation and relaxation. There are three modular pieces from which you can create countless shapes, and a variety of fabrics and finishes that can be combined with one another – once again alluding to Pixel’s name.

He designed this collection to inspire people to use the asymmetric sofa in whatever way they want, explaining “When we go out in nature and sit on a pile of rocks we always find our preferred spot. Suddenly one of the edges becomes a seat, an armrest or even a table. Inspired by this idea, I wanted to create a very open sofa concept.”

Following this open sofa concept, Pebble is made to order and customizable. Bolia makes them with or without a side table, in many different colors, and with the armrest on either the right or left side. Plus, it works as a single sofa or a multi-unit, with several sofas nesting seamlessly next to one another.

Since this sofa collection is easily designed to fit any space,

NEA Studio Designed the Beanie Sofa out of Lentils

Let’s talk about sofas. Most are made from foam, down, feathers, springs, or some combination thereof, which results in many being too hard or too soft… but the new Beanie Sofa aims to be just right. Designed by NEA Studio, the LEED certified sofa is filled with lentil beans and organic latex, along with a wooden structure, that support the natural curves and movements of the human body. Think of it like a modern bean bag sofa you will never feel the need to squirrel away in another room so no one ever sees it.

Beanie is composed of two giant cushions, one that stretches out and above the ends of the other one, making it the perfect nap sofa. Speaking of naps, bean-filled furniture is known to ease back pain by helping muscles to relax while maintaining good posture. That means it’s supportive but super comfortable so you

Best of NeoCon 2019

Once again, Design Milk headed off to Chicago to the Merchandise Mart to see the latest and greatest in commercial design at NeoCon 2019. Along with a continuation of privacy furniture, much of the new designs seemed to blur the lines between workplace and home, offering companies options that provide a more comfortable and cozy feel. Color and modularity also were standouts as the workspace continues to evolve with companies focusing just as much on aesthetics as they do on functionality. Take a look at some of our favorites from this year’s show.

Is your summer oasis in check? The Bungalow Collection, designed by landscape designer Jamie Durie for Riva 1920, has been updated. Alongside the original leather and hardwood collection a new full-fledged outdoor version is available thanks to a set of new, more durable materials. The Bungalow Outdoor Collection uses teakwood, known for its unique weather-resistance, and strong outdoor fabrics have turned these sleekly designed pieces into something worthy of backyards, poolsides, and more.

The Bungalow Armchair and Bungalow Bar Stool are padded and upholstered in outdoor fabric that’s been treated with a base of oil and natural vegetable wax with pine extracts for protection. The Bungalow Side Table and the Bungalow Bar Table feature marble tops, and each and every piece is completely assembled and smoothed by hand.

Since 1979, Italian furniture brand Alias has partnered with designers who embody their vision of combining craftsmanship and technology. One of those longstanding collaborators is Michele De Lucchi, and together the two have recently released trigono.

Known for his contemporary designs, De Lucchi’s trigono sofa features a visible wooden frame that’s both lightweight and sturdy. The sofa’s structure is made up of two side stands, a central beam, and a system of belts that support the cushions of the seat that is cantilevered. It shows off attention to detail and a knowledge of geometric angles juxtaposed with solid and empty volumes that characterize the piece.

The trigono collection consists of a 2-seater sofa, a 3-seater sofa, and an armchair.

Paying homage to his naval architecture studies, Trubridge was inspired by boat construction and gave the seat a silhouette that looks like something that would float and let you drift away on. It features an intriguing shape that might make someone pause to figure out what it is or how to use it, and then realize it’s smiling at you.

Waka spans three-meters in length with a wider middle that tapers in towards both ends, allowing for multiple people to sit on it at once. Its quilted upholstered exterior features a crosshatch pattern that’s similar to the patterns found in some the lighting Trubridge is best known for.

This is a play between industrial construction and handicraft, which means that it

Another distinguishing feature of the sofa includes the metal base, which comes in a variety of finishes, and serves to elevate and lighten the sofa’s substantial volume. In addition, the sofa allows for extreme customization, offering a wide variety of fabrics and finishes.

In regards to what inspired the design, Thorpe states, “An old saying goes, the greatest love songs are written by songwriters with broken hearts – that was also the case when I designed the Heartbreaker sofa system. It may seem like a cliché, but it was in the scribbles during sleepless nights that this almost obvious shape took form, helping

The Panama collection, designed by Ludovica + Roberto Palomba, distinguishes its pieces with simple, intertwined forms that are inspired by the shadows palm trees cast while swaying in the breeze.

Rope, fabric, and wood are just some of the elements that come together to create a relaxing oasis in Talenti’s fresh and unmistakable style. The collection includes chairs, loungers, sun beds, poufs, and sofas made with rope wound around their frames in a way that creates a play of light and shadow as the sunlight moves through them. In particular, the organic profile of the chaise lounge makes us think of the surface of stones found on the beach, adding bold natural lines to a collection that has a strong, modern feel.

Patricia Urquiola Designs a Sofa for Moroso Inspired by Japanese Stones

Fresh off its launch at Salone del Mobile, the Gogan sofa takes a fresh approach with seating design. Its curvy, oversized components reference Japanese stones that become smooth over time thanks to the wind and water. Designed by Patricia Urquiola for Moroso, the plush, irregular shape appears solid yet comfortable to lie on, perfectly positioned to hold its form much like a rock sculpture.

The seat slightly inclines towards the back for added comfort allowing the back cushion to remain low.

Abutments join the seat cushions with the back before running underneath the sofa for its structure, giving it the appearance that it’s floating.

The direction-free bouclé fabric is based on a 70’s fabric found in the Moroso textile archive which gives it a river rocklook.
