Kjær’s goal was to design a line of furniture that felt like a natural extension of the architecture surrounding it, paying careful attention to scale so it felt balanced. She also placed importance on designing the furniture so that it would last in the outdoors through rain, wind, sun, and snow. Indoor-Outdoor comes in solid teak that will age beautifully and it requires very little maintenance. Brazilian outdoor brand Tidelli recently expanded into the U.S. market with the opening of their showroom in Southern California. To celebrate the company’s 25th anniversary, they enlisted designer Maria Candida Machado to design a new collection. The result is the Escuna Collection, outdoor furniture inspired by nautical rope.
tidelli-escuna-maria-candida-machado-2 Merging nautical rope, aluminum, and wood, the pieces, which include the Sailor Chaise, the Lounge Chair, and the Swing, exude a timeless, relaxing aesthetic that will have you dreaming of warmer weather. Besides their dreamy vibe, the bright colors are enticing and you can choose from over 40 color variations. tidelli-escuna-maria-candida-machado-3 From Maria Candida Machado:
I strongly believe the nautical rope is one of the best – if not the best – material for outdoor furniture (and indoors). The rope firmness and flexibility influenced me tremendously. It’s resistant, customizable and, most important very versatile to work with.

Wood Objects Inspired By Sushi

Tel Aviv-based designer Ori Ravgad created three unique objects for his graduation project that explore the art of wood veneer. Taking inspiration from the ancient technique of rolling sushi, he created the Paipu (pipe in Japanese) Wood Technique, where wooden pipes are compressed in custom-made molds to create a custom wood veneer.
IMGL5183 These wooden pipes create a new dimension of casting. Using a rolling wooden pipe method, the resulting wood veneer is a unified, full surface in consistent waves, vs. the perspective layers resulting from lamination. The three objects that exemplify this new wooden pipe technique consist of a light fixture, stool, and swing, and are named “Object on a Roll.” IMGL5177 IMGL5371 IMGL5391 IMGL5395 IMGL5228 IMGL5258 IMGL5263 IMGL5215 IMGL5431 IMGL5277

Rocking Outdoor Animals for Children

Rocking Outdoor Animals for Children Designed by Chan Wai Lim of Little Thoughts Group, these outdoor rocking animals were inspired by where the designer grew up. Wai Lim spent her childhood on a farm in Singapore playing with farm animals and objects handmade out of wood. Life in the 70s was much simpler then so she set out to share a bit of those memories through a trio of outdoor rocking chairs for children. Dubbed Icons of Sembawang, the animals will no doubt put smiles on the kids’ faces. Icons-Of-Sembawang-Rocking-Chairs-2 The rocking chairs are made of eco-friendly Heveatech wood, which is weather resistant, termite resistant, and extremely durable, so they’re perfect for outdoor use. An Interactive Installation by Philippe Malouin for Caesarstone

An Interactive Installation by Philippe Malouin for Caesarstone Designer Philippe Malouin created a whimsical, interactive installation for Caesarstone at this month’s IDS Toronto. Swings is a circular structure composed of 12 swings that toy with the idea of merging play and contemporary art. The minimalist, monolithic structure feels sculptural and adult while at the same time referencing childhood memories of swinging. Swings-for-Caesarstone-IDS-2015-Philippe-Malouin-2 The swings are made of Caesarstone’s Supernatural Series in new colors and textures, as well as the upcoming Concrete Series.

From Malouin:
The installation invites people to interact with the product naturally. Although it looks and feels extremely natural, the material has some really amazing qualities for designers to work with and which allow it to be machined and handled with more flexibility than stone.
