Bang & Olufsen’s Beosound Edge Sonically Circular Design Reveals a Delightful Surprise

                                The <a href="https://www.bang-olufsen.com/en/beosound-edge"  rel="noopener external noreferrer" data-wpel-link="external">Beosound Edge</a> by Bang &amp; Olufsen is a conundrum, a newly unveiled wireless audio speaker realized as a statement of minimalism, yet also unapologetically the sort of bold statement piece that elicits the curious to ask, &#8220;what is that?&#8221;

Designed to be placed onto the floor or wall-mounted as above, the speaker is discreetly outfitted with proximity sensors engineered to turn on the speaker’s aluminum surface touch interface. A close inspection reveals microscopic holes created with lasers for this touch controls.

Designer Michael Anastassiades – whose portfolio for his eponymous London-based studio reveals a profound curiosity for exploring the spare long note of minimalist expression – is responsible for this latest audio design for the luxe Danish heritage brand. Reimagining the wireless speaker as a centerpiece object lends itself to complication, but here Anastassiades distills the speaker to its simplest form – a circle. The typical trappings of an electronic audio device

The Architecture of Sound: Constellation Leo Audio System

Imagine superimposing the contemporary architectural angularity of a <a href="https://libeskind.com/" rel="noopener external noreferrer" data-wpel-link="external">Daniel Libeskind</a> structure to the form factor of an audiophile-rated speaker and what you might get is something like the <a href="https://www.constellationaudio.com/dominion/leo" data-wpel-link="external" rel="external noopener noreferrer">Constellation Audio Leo</a>, a high-end three-way stereo speaker system outfitted with a 6” subwoofer, 560 watts of amplification, and Chromecast, AirPlay and Bluetooth connectivity hidden within its sharply faceted topography.
The Leo is a “lifestyles” tabletop audio system engineered by a company normally focused upon catering to the stratosphere of higher end (and priced) audiophile components. Though the audiophile market has tended to lean toward discrete, multi-component systems to achieve optimal audio performance, Constellation Audio’s Leo is an attempt to engineer a high level of digital audio processing and amplification technologies within a single form factor. Noting the developing generation of music listeners increasingly prefer compact and mobile device connected systems like Sonos, the Apple HomePod, and other multi-room ready speakers, the Leo is

The Bunaco by Nendo is the Speaker We Want to Unwind To

Endless iterations of the <a href="https://design-milk.com/tag/speakers/" data-wpel-link="internal">audio speaker</a> fill the Design Milk archives, but arguably none so simple and subtly elegiac than the <a href="http://www.nendo.jp/en/works/bunaco-speaker/" data-wpel-link="external" rel="external noopener noreferrer">Bunaco speaker by Nendo</a>, an omnidirectional expression of Japanese minimalism and craftsmanship.
Using beech wood from trees grown in the Japanese prefecture of Aomori, the artisan company Bunaco specializes in hand coiling 1mm thin and 1cm-wide ribbon strips of wood into subtle forms so tight the resulting forms are capable of holding water without leaking (note: the technique is old, but not ancient, originally developed in 1956). Bunaco primarily uses the technique to make bowls, lampshades, and other wood housewares. In this unique instance they’ve collaborated with Oki Sato and his Japanese studio Nendo to take advantage of the acoustic properties of beech wood to “warm” up both audio performance and the aesthetic presence of a Bluetooth equipped wireless omnidirectional speaker.

The perception whether the Bunaco speaker is unfurling or coming

It&#8217;s wholly understandable if you mistook the <a href="http://pr01.laboiteconcept.com/" data-wpel-link="external" rel="external noopener noreferrer">Native Union x La Boite Concept PR / 01</a> Bluetooth speaker for a vintage stereo speaker that lost its secondary partner. From all appearances, its wood cabinetry and metal trim hint of a time when &#8220;hi-fidelity&#8221; systems aspired to look as fine as they sound – it&#8217;s a speaker designed not to only look the part of audiophile equipment from decades ago, but engineered to sound like one too.
The exterior design is only one half of the PR / 01 story – the rest resides hidden away within. Inside the classic wood and aluminum cabinetry the French acoustics specialist at La Boite reutilized a patent originally developed by the company’s Cagniard family back in the 1976; it required seven years to turn intent to reality. Adapted to support new digital technologies of today, the Active Pression Reflex utilizes two speakers housed within a multi-amplified

Bang & Olufsen Goes Green With the Harmonies Collection

The 5-piece collection is characterized by its mix of green anodised aluminum, Infantry green woven Kvadrat fabric, brass-tone detailing, and smoked oak wooden legs; applied onto the BeoSound 1, BeoSound 2, BeoPlay A9, BeoPlay M5, and BeoSound 35 the organic theme transforms B&O’s usually distinct cool Nordic minimalism into a more lush and warmer presence. Brass continues to maintain a popular presence within the home furnishings and accessories market, and matching it with an earthy and leafy hue results in a surprisingly effective pairing of organic expression not normally associated with Bang & Olufsen audio speaker systems. The aesthetic elements won’t “color” the sound, but may open further possibilities of speaker placement

Porsche 911 GT3 Speaker Showcases an Exhaustive Amount of Detailing

You don&#8217;t have to be a Porsche fanatic to be impressed with the <em>exhaustive</em> amount of detailing that <a href="http://www.porsche-design.com/en/europe/" data-wpel-link="external" rel="external noopener noreferrer">Porsche Design</a> went to while designing their latest glossy black <a href="http://www.porsche-design.com/en/Men/911-Speaker.html" data-wpel-link="external" rel="external noopener noreferrer">Bluetooth speaker</a>.
Those aluminum twin pipes aren’t just facsimiles of the real thing, they’re genuine exhaust-pipes culled from the parts chain typically used to cap the exhaust ends of the Porsche 911 GT3. This latest design is a refined followup to an industrial-styled predecessor, the Porsche 911 soundbar (below), a wild 200 watt 2.1 virtual surround system constructed with the original rear silencer and twin exhaust from a 911 GT3. At an exchange rate of about $570 – give or take a Euro – the twin speaker Bluetooth 4.0 enabled doesn’t come cheap, but it does come equipped for instant NFS device connectivity and wireless CD quality sound via apt-X technology. As the dual output makes evident, the 60-watt system is engineered for stereo output, with a battery playback time

Concrete Audio F1 Wall Speakers Are a Brutalist’s Dream Come True

<a href="http://www.concrete-audio.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer external" data-wpel-link="external">Concrete Audio&#8217;s</a> moniker should make it evident the German-based audio company&#8217;s faith lies with neither wood nor ceramics, but with the mixture of cement, water, and sand. The company&#8217;s F1 wall-mounted loudspeaker resides somewhere within the overlap of a Venn diagram between audiophile and architectural.
The immediate and obvious question that arises amongst the layman of course is, “Why concrete?” The short and simple answer: to eliminate unwanted vibrations.
A good loudspeaker housing should not vibrate, as modern drivers (the actual loudspeaker in the box) today render the full sound spectrum linearly. But if the housing itself does vibrate due to its construction or materials (wood, plastic), then those vibrations affect performance by amplifying or diminishing certain sympathetic frequencies within the sound spectrum.
Concrete’s unique properties – it’s weight, irregular structure, and density – provide a medium untainted by the intrusion of unwelcome vibrations, the audiophile’s enemy. Each 32mm

There are few categories as tired and rote currently as the realm of wireless speakers. Fortunately <a href="https://lexonusa.com/" data-wpel-link="external" rel="external noopener noreferrer">Lexon</a> turned to Korean design studio <a href="http://bebopdesigners.com/" data-wpel-link="external" rel="external noopener noreferrer">Bebop</a> to conceive something notably different, a portable audio design representing tactile simplicity in service of function. The <a href="http://bebopdesigners.com/blossom/" data-wpel-link="external" rel="external noopener noreferrer">BLOSSOM</a> is portable Bluetooth speaker with a unique 360 degrees design that opens when needed, closes back up for easy travel.
As the name implies, the BLOSSOM references the shape and function of the floral; an audio-dispersing cone sits within a cylinder, opening upward for playback and emanating music every direction with controls available across the top of its flexible spandex material cover. When pushed down, the cone element slides securely into the cylinder for compact and safe travel. Those with a background and memory in consumer audio design well before the era of digital audio may recognize a similarity to the mid-century Zenith Circle of Sound Speakers – omnidirectional stereo speakers with a similar shape and operating under a similar premise of

                                                <a href="http://design-milk.com/sonos-playbase/sonos-playbase-07/" data-wpel-link="internal"><img src="http://1.design-milk.com/images/2017/05/SONOS-playbase-07-810x592.jpeg" alt="The Sonos PLAYBASE is a Platform for Simplicity" /></a>
It was about a year ago when I sat with Tad Toulis, Vice President of Design at Sonos, to discuss the state of design within the consumer realm of technology: notable successes, perceived failures, with the occasional predictive stab at where home entertainment was heading for the majority of customers who &#8216;just want things to work&#8217; with uncomplicated, intuitive reliability. At the time Toulis passingly hinted something significant was in the works amongst his team to better serve this silent majority of people demanding ease with flexible function without sacrificing design, but he wouldn&#8217;t/couldn&#8217;t reveal specifics. The new <a href="http://www.sonos.com/en-us/shop/playbase.html" data-wpel-link="external" rel="external noopener noreferrer">Sonos PLAYBASE</a>, a television speaker that moonlights as a capable music speaker, was likely that hinted promise of technological complexity disguised in the simplest of forms.
That Toulis is passionate about the process of design is immediately obvious – ideation, editing, solving, continually questioning, and finally forming from a multitude of small and sometimes invisible details an amorphous idea into a product that

The B&O Play Beoplay P2 is Designed for Poolside Playback

                                                <a href="http://design-milk.com/bo-play-beoplay-p2/beoplay-p2-speaker-111/" data-wpel-link="internal"><img src="http://3.design-milk.com/images/2017/04/Beoplay-P2-speaker-111-810x532.jpg" alt="The B&#038;O Play Beoplay P2 is Designed for Poolside Playback" /></a>
One look at Bang &amp; Olufsen&#8217;s recently unveiled <a href="http://design-milk.com/beosound-shape-modular-audio/" rel="noopener noreferrer" data-wpel-link="internal">BeoSound Shape</a> modular wall audio system, and it was hard not to imagine the beehive configuration as a chorus of portable speakers. Alas, the hexagonal array weren&#8217;t removable to move and use as individual portable speakers as one might hope (we tried!). Instead, you&#8217;ll have to look to their more youthful imprint, <a href="https://www.beoplay.com/" data-wpel-link="external" rel="external noopener noreferrer">B&amp;O Play</a>, for their latest portable option: the <a href="https://www.beoplay.com/products/beoplayp2#techspec" data-wpel-link="external" rel="external noopener noreferrer">Beoplay P2</a>.
Backpack/purse sized portability: check. Splash and dust resistant case: check. Crisp audio output: check. Bluetooth connectivity: check. 10 hour playback: check. Distinct modern Danish industrial design: check. Button and switch controls: ….ahem. The absence of controls is completely intentional, and B&O Play’s reductive design is the Beoplay P2’s most distinct feature: there’s no physical controls blemishing the profile of this perforated palm-sized pebble (say that 3x fast) besides a subtle power button on the back, lanyard loop, and perpetually agape USB-C port. Everything else one might expect adorning a portable speaker has

The speaker is cast in a unique geometric form using proprietary concrete composite that lends itself to both the aesthetic of the speaker as well as its acoustic superiority. The concrete increases dampening, reduces resonance, and creates an overall purer sound. The dampening properties are so high that the speaker can play at full volume without causing a record to skip or the table and floor to vibrate. The speaker is outfitted with dual 4″ woven Kevlar long throw woofers, a 1.5″ titanium tweeter and diamond-cut anodized aluminum controls. An elegant, magnetically attached steel

Whyd Wants to Make Listening to Music a Matter of Asking

                                                <a href="http://design-milk.com/whyd-voice-command-speakers/whyd-wireless-speaker-3/" data-wpel-link="internal"><img src="http://3.design-milk.com/images/2017/04/WHYD-wireless-speaker-3-810x724.jpg" alt="Whyd Wants to Make Listening to Music a Matter of Asking" /></a>
Ask and you shall receive. That&#8217;s the core premise behind the <a href="https://whyd.com/" data-wpel-link="external" rel="external noopener noreferrer">Whyd</a> speaker system, a pill-shaped audio device designed to always be listening for your next command.
What’s inside the pill-shaped enclosure? A 100mm subwoofer with long excursion suspension and ferrite magnet engineered to push out deep bass even with its compact dimensions, 4 x 40 mm full range drivers with neodymium magnet and aluminium diaphragm, and Class-D amplifiers powering them all. Whyd speakers are designed to work by themselves or paired up in the same room in left/right stereo sound output. Additionally there are five microphones listening with advanced noise cancellation that allows the speaker to discern user voice commands even with background or ambient noise battling for its attention. In that sense, one could think of the Whyd as a better looking (but limited featured) version of the Amazon Echo specifically designed for music playback. The top of
