New York City based designer Joe Doucet partnered for the second time with Odabashian on a collection of handcrafted rugs that he designed in support of the Transgender community. The Transcendence rug series came about as a response to the ongoing challenges faced by transgender people who are bravely living their truth in a society that often shuns them with the hope that we can rise above and move forward with open minds. The bold, four-piece collection aims to be an example that design can transcend and be used for good. In a measure to show just that, they’re donating a portion of the sales proceeds to the ACLU.

From Joe Doucet:
The uniting theme of the series became Transcendence. I wanted to capture the beauty of outwardly becoming what you are internally. The four rugs each attempt to convey

The hand knotted rugs, made in Nepal with hand spun Tibetan wool, come in two designs – one showcasing smaller dots and the other larger dots – and in two black and white colorways, either positive or negative. The range, depending on the dot size, goes from mostly white in color to mostly black with two falling in the middle. Each rug is labor intensive and time consuming, as the Tibetan knotting technique takes three skilled craftsmen a full day to weave just 7 cm of a 200 cm wide rug. The local craftsman they’re working with utilize skills passed down through their families, generation to generation, and by doing so, they’re keeping the traditional techniques alive while helping those families continue to earn a living. The collection focuses on using textiles, like linen, hemp yarn, manually woven hemp textiles, reed, and feathers, that could be paired with wooden structures. The result is a beautiful collection of goods with a feel-good story behind how they came to be.

The duo explored natural materials from their home countries (Romania and Moldova) and how they were used in hopes of supporting local manufacturers and creating new, sustainable products that have a story.

Design Milk gets an inside look at Mohawk Group’s new modular carpet tile collection, Lichen, designed by Jason F. McLennan, Founder of the Living Product Challenge, and his team at McLennan Design. Inspired by real lichen, the series uses colors and growth patterns from real lichen species to create abstract, organic flooring. Lichen is the first product to receive the Living Product Challenge Petal certification, which measures sustainable manufacturing on a multi-prong system. Learn more about it:

Way On: Providing Solutions For New Habits of Society

This year at Salone del Mobile 2017, the University School of Design and Art of Barcelona (EINA), put their students front and center with Way On. Showcasing six projects developed by third and fourth year students in the Design program, each project explored the idea of user experience and provided solutions to an ever changing world. The Way On initiative was coordinated by professors Javier Nieto and Oriol Ventura.
Though Nomad may first seem like a giant chair, it is in fact a shelter for everyday life. This shared space, designed by Ferran Gesa and Caterina Vianna, is a different way to work together and get a moment’s respite during a busy day. Köllen Tryk is no ordinary wall hanger. Students Oriol Campillo, Núria Jané, Adrián Soldado and Paula Terra combined forces to create an interactive hanger that the user can play with. By pushing the knobs in or out, the

A Solid Case for Concrete on Society6

I’ve been seeing a lot of concrete products over on our sister Instagram @designmilkeveryday and love that this material is currently trending. There’s something cool about seeing the raw, industrial material applied to accessible modern design versus on the ground or in architecture. On the subject of accessible (and while we’re at it, affordable), Society6 artists have been applying this material to their designs. I love that there are so many items you can choose from, whether you’re looking for a new clock or a new shower curtain, there’s something on Society6 for all your home needs. Here are a few of my favorite products:
