Many of us live or have lived with those out-of-the-box basic pendant lamps that the landlord or builder got on sale at the nearest hardware store. They’re easy to swap out and when you do, it makes the biggest difference by completely changing the look of your space and how it lights it. To give you some idea of all the options out there, we rounded up 10 modern pendant lamps we’d love to live with.

The Twist’s 3D printed DNA results in a slightly gritty and matte black nylon plastic finish, a grippy texture that benefits the twist adjustment design. The amount of light is adjusted by raising the bottom ring until it is in contact with the top ring, then each rotated in opposite directions to open or close the woven shade design. Once the desired amount of light is reached, the rings are separated to lock the shade into place.

The Douwes Pendant&Socket is designed to offer light and electricity over a kitchen table or desk while proving that sockets don’t have to be unattractive. Designed by Studio Lotte Douwes for Menu, the pair (available separately as the Pendant Lamp and Socket) is crafted from sustainably-produced, light grey porcelain that’s minimalist and neutral enough to work in just about any setting that’s in need of overhead light and/or a convenient place to plug-in.

With the popularity of open workspaces these days, they’d work great hung above a long co-working table alternating between the two to provide both light and a place to charge laptops. With freestanding desks and even kitchen tables, outlets aren’t readily available making it hard to plug things in. The Douwes Socket brings an attractive flexibility that helps to enhance your work or personal life with additional freedom.

Last year Mexican design brand Studio davidpompa released the Ambra collection of lighting that included a table lamp and wall lamp made of cantera rose and copper. Now, they’ve unveiled the latest member of the family – the Ambra pendant – which continues the exploration of contrasting materials and proportions.

The pendant boasts an elegant geometrical silhouette with two cylindrical forms made from dusty pink cantera rosa, a volcanic rock made up of volcanic ash and dust, that rests at the end of a brushed copper cylinder. Hanging alone or in a configuration of multiples, the pendant makes for a striking sculptural light.

Paying homage to Kiev-born artist and founder of the Suprematism art movement Kazimir Malevich, Ukrainian design studio NOOM created a geometric collection of lighting and vases called Suprematic. Designers Kateryna Sokolova and Arkady Vartanov both live and work in Malevich’s hometown of Kiev making his art a natural source of inspiration. When designing their first collection, the pair incorporated copper and painted steel, geometric-shaped components that join together to form sculptural structures.

The geometric components in the vases are not only decorative, they help divide and hold the flowers in place for unique arrangement. Even with no flowers, the vases are art objects on display until they’re filled with flowers again.

The Suprematic collection recently debuted at Maison&Objet.

After shows in Milan and New York City, British design phenom Lee Broom is presenting his third and final installment of his Observatory lighting collection during the London Design Festival. Broom will transform his Shoreditch showroom with the celestial-inspired fixtures “that play with proportions of vertical and horizontal space, and the refraction and reflection of light,” marking the first time they’re shown in the UK. Observatory comprises five collections – Orion, Lens Flair, Eclipse, Tidal, and Aurora – each outfitted with concealed LEDs that emit soft, diffused light from their sculptural silhouettes.

Orion is a modular, tube-like design with contrasting opaque and solid spheres that can be hung in various configurations for a custom, horizontal and vertical constellation of lights. At London Design Festival, a new black finish will be on display (see initial image).

Lens Flair is a spherical fixture inspired by telescopic lenses and horizontal and vertical refractions.

The process-focused designs of Amsterdam-based designer Floris Wubben have been well documented on Design Milk and his latest work continues teetering on the line between functional objects and works of art. The Crystal Twist collection of lighting is composed of HI-MACS acrylic stone that looks as if it’s popped open like a refrigerated can of dough.

Watch the process:

The HI-MACS material is typically used for sleek surfaces, like countertops, but Wubben chose to use it to make lamps with a raw, organic quality. While working on the design he discovered that the material could be torn apart when it was heated. He created a tool that helped tear off the edges of the strips of acrylic stone and then wrapped the warm stone around a mold to create the spiral. To create the lamp, he layered the twisted stone so light would emit through the cracks and highlight the

British designer Sebastian Bergne’s lighting series, Poise, utilizes simple materials to create elegant sculptural lights inspired by the work of Isamu Noguchi. Much like Noguchi’s Akari collection, the Poise lamps transform from flat paper to three-dimensional objects through folding techniques used on basic paper bags. Each light is composed of paper, lead, cord, and stainless steel, with black geometric shades that emit soft directional light similar to those in a photography studio. The finished fixtures, which include a pendant, floor lamp, and table lamp, can easily be described as functional works of art, something that often describes Noguchi’s work.

Bergne created the lamps for the Akari Unfolded: A Collection by YMER&MALTA exhibition, which includes 26 lamps made in collaboration with six designers. The entire collection is on display until January 27, 2019 at The Noguchi Museum in Long Island City, New York.

The latest, Hoop, features a cage-like structure made of thin colorful wires with an elliptically shaped globe resting inside.

Rings of colorful wire create a simple, delicate form while the translucent diffuser emits light that softly illuminates the inner sides of the rings making the structure appear to glow.

Wink: A Lighting Collaboration Between Masquespacio and Houtique

Spanish creative agency Masquespacio worked with Houtique, a new branch of Really Nice Things, on a pendant light that resembles an eye winking. The idea came to Masquespacio’s Ana Hernández based on the thought that observation is one of the most critical elements during the design process. Needing to “see” and focus on each detail, led her to design Wink, the cheeky, yet sophisticated light with a row of pink “eyelashes”.

The “eye” looks to be winking with its gold half circle referencing the shape of the eye with the pink fringe acting as eyelashes suspended below. The lamp is abstract enough to work as a cool pendant without everyone immediately thinking “eye”, while also offering a fun option in place of a boring light.

The Castor Pendant Lamps feature funnel-shaped steel shades with sanded matte finishes that are paired with a glossy white edge. Used alone or hung in a group, the Castor Pendant can work over a dining table, kitchen island, or down a hallway.

The Denab Pendants are minimalist E26/E27 sockets with a lacquered covered and white ring attached to a 10 foot fabric covered cable. The Denab comes in six colors and can be paired with the fabric or felt lampshades seen below.

The light bulbs of London-based Tala are designed to glow bare, organically shaped blown glass lighting fixtures inspired by an unexpected source: the naturally occurring patterns that form overhead in tree canopies, alongside a lone filament snaking around a central column, a mathematical nod to the Fibonacci sequence.

Tala’s design and business practices are guided by the principle of “Conservation Through Beauty”.

Exposed light bulb fixtures offer an interesting decorative dichotomy: they’re somewhat old fashioned when considered in the context of the history of lighting. But increasingly we’re seeing bare bulbs outfitted with LED technology, paired with modern finishes and forms, illuminating contemporary spaces in pendant, floor, or table lighting forms.

Tala’s biomimicry in light bulb form reveal a reverence for the natural world and formations, appropriately paired with a bright yet efficient LED filament that should last over 20,000 hours while still putting out between 80-120 lumens (two sizes are available
