The Douwes Pendant&Socket Proves Sockets Don’t Have to Be Hidden

The Douwes Pendant&Socket is designed to offer light and electricity over a kitchen table or desk while proving that sockets don’t have to be unattractive. Designed by Studio Lotte Douwes for Menu, the pair (available separately as the Pendant Lamp and Socket) is crafted from sustainably-produced, light grey porcelain that’s minimalist and neutral enough to work in just about any setting that’s in need of overhead light and/or a convenient place to plug-in. With the popularity of open workspaces these days, they’d work great hung above a long co-working table alternating between the two to provide both light and a place to charge laptops. With freestanding desks and even kitchen tables, outlets aren’t readily available making it hard to plug things in. The Douwes Socket brings an attractive flexibility that helps to enhance your work or personal life with additional freedom.

Ana Maria works with established and emerging designers who are reinventing ordinary items into ones that are design-driven, artful, and enjoyable to use. Rather than filling a home with objects that normally would look more or less the same in every household (like a coffee press or electrical cable), Port of Raleigh provides you with clever-looking options that have the same functionality but an upgraded design. Some of these designs are either making their first debut in North Carolina, regionally in the Southeast USA, or even in all of the USA!

Even better is taking your meal somewhere other than your patio for a completely different experience. We’re big fans of picnics so we thought we’d scope out some goods that would make a good picnic great. Check out these 10 modern finds that will definitely raise your picnic game up a few notches.

A Sculptural Sofa Inspired by an Old Tailor Shop

When Portuguese designer Rui Alves began work on a sofa for Menu, he remembered his grandfather’s favorite tailor shop where he’d watch the tailors huddle over their work tables and the grey suits being hung with wooden hangers. As with that old tailor shop, he wanted everything out in the open on full display, which is completely atypical of most sofa designs. The Tailor Sofa stands out not just for its sculptural shape but because it’s beautiful from all angles.
Its overall appearance is visually light thanks to its open, natural oak wood structure that supports the curvy, upholstered foam shell. The Tailor Sofa is available in a Light Grey (Hallingdal 65) fabric or a Dark Brown (Dunes Leather) option.

NORM-Architects-MENU_charging The LED Carrie light is a no-frills portable and rechargable LED lamp envisioned for use across interior and exterior settings. The powder coated steel base connects to a removable handle; connected with its handle the Carrie operates as a lantern for portable tasks or situated overhead using a hook or branch, while sans handle, it operates as a secondary mood lighting lamp. In either instance, we think the Carrie LED is an entertaining design ideal for entertaining occasions.
