After a rebellious and experimental adolescence, he discovered design in school and fell in love. Then he got kicked out. 20+ years later, with many global successes (products, furniture, lighting, and magical hospitality interiors) to his name, he is focussed on celebrating small victories, continually learning something new, and warning against the dangers of design fundamentalism.

When you think of the characteristics of glass, both strong and fragile probably come to mind. The same can be said for those battling cancer, which is why it was chosen as the material for Luminaire’s 4th fundraising auction benefitting cancer research. Nasir and Nargis Kassamali, the founders of Luminaire, are hosting GlasLove, which has partnered with auction house Phillips to sponsor an online and live auction to benefit the Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute at Sylvester.
The auction is being made possible by some of the world’s top designers and manufacturers, including nendo, Marcel Wanders, Glas Italia, Naoto Fukasawa, Nao Tamura, Lasvit, Arcade, and Venini, who’ve donated one-off, limited edition, or prototype works that are made of glass. The auction runs through October 11th, 2016 and you can see all of the items available here.

We hopped on a plane last week to head to Amsterdam for the launch of the Marcel Wanders Circus Collection for Alessi. Prior to the event, the attendees had no idea what to expect. Upon arrival, we were ushered into a black room where the colorful collection was unveiled. Needless to say, it did not disappoint.

Bold colors merge with stainless steel, glass, and bone china, bringing the objects to life as if they were each wearing a costume. Alessi-Marcel-Wanders-Circus-3 White, black, yellow, red, gold, and silver make up the rhomboid, circular, striped, and geometrical shapes of each pattern throughout the collection, which includes: bowls, trays, jars, an ice bucket, bottle stands, a wine cooler, salad bowls, mugs,

Where I Work: Gabriele Chiave of Marcel Wanders Studio

Where I Work: Gabriele Chiave of Marcel Wanders Studio Gabriele Chiave spent his formative years moving from Dakar (four years), Caracas (five years), Buenos Aires (two years), and Rome (three years), giving him a multicultural perspective before even finishing high school. After receiving his French baccalaureate diploma, he headed to Milan where he spent nine years, during which time he studied Industrial Design at IED. In 2007 he landed in Amsterdam where he landed the covetable gig of being Creative Director at Marcel Wanders Studio overseeing all projects in product and interior design, and art direction for a number of premium design brands. The incredibly busy art aficionado and jazz lover took some time to give us a look into the magical world of the Marcel Wanders Studio, in this month’s Where I Work.
