Wingårdhs was tasked with refreshing the hotel’s 170 guest rooms, lobby, meeting rooms, new restaurant and bars. The main priority of the renovation was to create a warm, inviting atmosphere that highlighted both new features and the original details of the storied hotel, which originally opened in 1912 to coincide with the year’s Olympic Games. A custom color called Strand Grey was created specifically for the hotel, complementing the other neutral and

21Spaces Works with Local Craftspeople to Breathe New Life into The Alex in Dublin

Dublin-based interior architectural and design firm 21Spaces has recently transformed one of Dublin’s most established hotels The Alexender into The Alex – a series of contemporary spaces that reflect the changing pace of life in the Irish capital. “The refurbishment of The Alex could not have been better timed,” says founder and director John Henry Boyle. “The demand on a central location and the demographic shift following the relocation nearby of multi-national companies such as Twitter’s European Headquarters has meant that since the redesign The Alex has become a busy and lively all-day destination.”
The concept for the 105-room hotel draws inspiration from the heritage of the local area, including a tramline that once ran right past the hotel, and local 1950s interiors (the building itself only dates from 1990 despite appearing much older). “We went out and looked at the other buildings in the neighborhood, and there were

The Faubourg Montmartre neighborhood has become a bourgeoning center for Paris’ creatives. For traveling creatives, they can also partake in the neighborhood’s creative energy by staying at the Hôtel Parister, a boutique hotel that gives a modern spin on the old world charm of Paris.
Designed by architect Aldric Beckmann of Beckmann N’Thepe studio, the ground floor of the Hôtel Parister is home to the hotel’s “Les Passerelles,” an open space of libraries and lounges so that travelers can unwind outside of their guest rooms. The interior is filled with wooden benches upholstered with velvet, terrazzo tables, and brass accents that define elegant hospitality. The 45 rooms, suites, and duplexes are generous in size (unheard of in a city like Paris) and the minimalist theme from the first floor continues into the guest rooms. There are three duplexes, each equipped with either a hammam, a sauna, or a private

It hasn’t even been a full month since I visited Iceland and I’m already itching to go again. While my previous hotel had a picture perfect view of the Harpa Concert Hall, I think for my next stay, I’d choose the Ion City Hotel, Ion Hotel’s outpost property in Reykjavik.
Similar to its sister hotel, the Ion Adventure Hotel, the Ion City Hotel combines modern design with Nordic charm for an accommodation that design lovers and jet-setters would both appreciate. Designed by architecture studio MINARC, the property features 18 rooms and suites, with interiors that make subtle references to Icelandic design. For example, a color palette of grays, whites and blacks mimics the surrounding glaciers and lava fields of Iceland. The hallways that lead to the guest rooms are also inspired by the countryside’s rugged terrain, with cuts of light illuminating the way for guests making their

On an island like Rhodes, Greece, you don’t need much to have the most idyllic vacation of your life, which is why the Monocabin is the perfect place for you to relax, unwind and soak in the scenic beach views this island offers.
Less is more at this tiny vacation rental but also, tiny is actually just enough. Designed by Mandalaki Design Studio, the micro home is the studio’s first architectural prototype exemplifying their vision of design, which is a return to the basics. Mandalaki sees the Monocabin as “a livable design object,” a juxtaposition of modern, streamline design and organic surroundings. The 1-bed, 1-bath house is indeed small but so thoughtfully designed that you’ll have everything you need to make yourself feel right at home, including a kitchen, storage area, closet, garden-view terrace, outdoor shower, and fitness zone. Additional amenities include a projector for Netflix movie watching, a

Inspired by the quiet, hidden beauty of nature found in Nanxun and its Southern China style gardens, the interior design studio combines contemporary western design with the heritage of the building and site for a tranquil retreat away from the busy city life of Shanghai.
Thomas Dariel of Dariel Studio infused Chinese motifs and themes into the interior design of the hotel. For example, the villa was originally built in 1930 by Liu Geng Gan, the richest person in Nanxun, as a place for him to collect books but he also had a silk business. The studio used knitted geometric-shaped silk screens to divide spaces into different areas and hung blue and red silk stripes inside the hotel’s restaurant for a subtle, spatial look. Dariel also took inspiration from occupations

Tel Aviv, also know as the White City, is home to the world’s largest number of buildings (about 4,000) of Bauhaus-style buildings. Walking through the city, one notices that many of these buildings are neglected and dilapidated, even though Tel Aviv was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.
poli-house_karim-rashid_yael-engelhart_11 But strolling up to the corner of Allenby and Nahalat Binyamin, there is one building that has been gloriously restored. Gleaming white with a curved edifice and luminous windows, it’s home to the just-opened Poli House boutique hotel, which underwent a three-year restoration process. Originally built in 1934, the Poli House used to be called The Polishuk House, and housed commercial office space, shops, and a clandestine Etzel printing press. Its Bauhaus-style edifice was designed by Shlomo Liaskowski, who was born in Zurich in 1903 and moved to British Mandate Palestine in 1929.

It’s becoming a modern day preference that when away from their homes, travelers don’t want to feel like they’re traveling. They want to eat, visit, and stay like a local, not a tourist. This was one of Danish design studio SPACE Copenhagen’s goals when designing Soho’s new 11 Howard Hotel. By combining New York’s classic feel with Scandinavian design traditions, SPACE Copenhagen created contemporary interiors for each of the 221 guest rooms filled with beautiful objects that were meticulously and carefully considered.
SPACE-Copenhagen-11Howard-14 The guest rooms, which look and feel more like an artist’s home than a traditional hotel, all have custom designed pieces by SPACE Copenhagen, from light fixtures to accent furniture. SPACE-Copenhagen-11Howard-5 Luminous oak oiled furniture from SPACE Copenhagen’s Fly Collection in collaboration with &tradition can be found in each room. SPACE-Copenhagen-11Howard-2
We’re really interested in materials – stone, woods, leathers. We love things that age well. It’s part of our responsibility

In this month’s Destination Design, we take off to Paris to visit Hôtel Joséphine, a boutique hotel with a cabaret vibe located just minutes from the famed Moulin Rouge. Noted interior designer Julie Gauthron gave the hotel a colorful, early 19th century French contemporary look inspired by the cabaret itself.
Destin-Hotel-Josephine-Julie-Gauthron-1a Destin-Hotel-Josephine-Julie-Gauthron-2 Charming floral decor is interspersed with modern wares giving the interior a vintage, yet modern feel for visitors. There are 41 rooms that span six floors, each carefully executed by Gauthron, who has a unique way with hotels (remember Hotel Crayon Paris?). An Abandoned Inn Becomes an Eco-Conscious Hotel in Iceland

With a past that involves housing workers at the Nesjavellir Geothermal Power Plant, this former inn was sitting vacant in 2011 when it was acquired. With the help of faraway Santa Monica-based design studio Minarc, the abandoned building was renovated to become the eco-conscious ION Adventure Hotel, represented by Design Hotels™, in Selfoss, Iceland. For this month’s Destination Design, we visit this luxurious Icelandic hotel.
Destination-ION-Adventure-Hotel-2 The easily accessible hotel blends modern design with the natural landscape of Iceland in its background. The 45 rooms are a mix of industrial concrete and warm natural elements, like locally salvaged driftwood and lava. Destination-ION-Adventure-Hotel-3 The hotel’s location allows guests to enjoy the best that Iceland has to offer – with its close proximity to Reykjavik for city fixes and the Mount Hengill volcano for various adventures, there’s plenty to enjoy in the quaint town. Arrive Hotel Lands in Palm Springs

Palm Springs continues to be a hot spot for weekend getaways and covetable, weeklong vacations thanks to its close proximity to Los Angeles. Just recently, the new ARRIVE hotel landed on the scene with its cozy desert vibe settling perfectly into the neighborhood with its restaurant, coffee shop, and ice cream shop that share property with its 32 rooms. With projects built up and down the west coast, Chris Pardo, the hotel’s busy architect/designer, as well as co-founder, knew exactly what he wanted since he was his own client.
Arrive-Hotel-Chris-Pardo-2 The hotel’s property houses nine buildings with profiles that mimic the surrounding mountain ridges, while also giving nod to mid-century architecture, something Palm Springs is well known for. Arrive-Hotel-Chris-Pardo-3 The relaxed vibe is steered through the use of a natural palette of rusted steel, wood, and concrete, with the occasional use of color. The project was designed with a focus on energy efficiency

A Hotel in Athens That’s a Throwback to Classic Modernism

The hotel, which stands in the foothills of the Acropolis, was designed by Stavros Papayiannis of Stage Design Office to be a fresh approach to Greek design.
Destination-AthensWas-Hotel-Greece-2 The interior was designed with large, light-filled spaces that benefit from the shiny marble and walnut, two materials that are prevalent throughout. Throughout the hotel, furniture by legendary designers, like Le Corbusier, Ettore Sottsass, and Michael Graves, was used. Destination-AthensWas-Hotel-Greece-3 Just off the street, the hotel’s restaurant invites guests and anyone passing by to come into the classic space full of wood, spicy tones, and a buffed marble floor. The space’s mid-century feels comes courtesy of the Luisa Chair, by Franco
