Matthew John Bacher’s chair, “A Piece of Tlaltecuhtli,” won this year’s competition and he incorporated the Milano Rosso laminate pattern for its resemblance to real stone. The sculptural chair looks at the politics of cultural appropriation with the hope of creating some type of visual dialogue. Bacher was inspired by the giant Tlaltecuhtli Monolith that was excavated at Museo del Templo Mayor in Mexico City in 2006. The Waves chair, by Anna Karreskog, takes a look at the waves

There is nothing in our lives that wasn’t created by someone. From your laptop to your favorite coffee mug to the bottle of shampoo in your shower, the work of product designers is so ubiquitous that it’s often nearly invisible. The recently-launched Airgora aims to change that. She spotted a connection gap in the marketplace: Companies need designers to turn ideas into products, designers need better ways to promote their services, and consumers need an easier way to find the products with best designs. Airgora closes that gap by giving designers the opportunity to raise their visibility to

Expectations are paralyzing: The pile of plywood, the stack of laminate, the blank piece of paper. “The difference between an amateur and a professional is in their habits.” The writer Steven Pressfield explains, “An amateur craps out. A professional shows up, does his work and keeps truckin’ no matter what.” How do you get a student to turn pro? You throw them in the deep end of the pool and let them swim.

When it comes to flexing your creative muscle, Doritos might not necessarily be the first thing you think of. But there’s where you would be wrong.
It was a creative spark of genius that birthed the beloved snack, when the chip was created in an effort to up-cycle tortillas into an innovative new snack by adding a flavorful combinations of spices and flavors. To help foster the same kind of creative thinking that turned excess tortillas into supermarket gold, Doritos launched their “Crash the Super Bowl” video contest. After 10 years of success with that campaign, Doritos is cultivating a community of thinkers, creators and artists called Legion of the Bold. Well, they’re also now winners of this year’s Fairy Tales with their gripping sci-fi narrative called “Welcome to the Fifth Façade,” which was accompanied by dream-like illustrations of structures inside silhouettes. SOFTlab Wins Flatiron Public Plaza Holiday Design Competition

SOFTlab Wins Flatiron Public Plaza Holiday Design Competition The Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership Business Improvement District (BID) and the Van Alen Institute recently announced the winner of the Flatiron Public Plaza Holiday Design Competition, which called for proposals for a temporary installation in NYC’s Flatiron District. The winning proposal came from SOFTlab, whose Nova installation opens November 18th and will be on display through the holidays as part of the Partnership’s annual “23 Days of Flatiron Cheer” programming. We spoke with SOFTlab’s Founder and Principal, Michael Szivos, about the design and partnering with 3M on the materials here’s what he had to say. SOFTlab-Flatiron-public-plaza-competition-2 What about the Flatiron location inspired the direction of the piece? The surrounding context of landmark buildings was the biggest influence on the design. The installation is meant to be a kind pedestrian scale kaleidoscope that uses the surrounding urban context as the material to get fragmented and multiplied in the various view cones of
