A Playful Exploration with Fiberglass by Asa Pingree

When you think of fiberglass, you probably think of the iconic Eames molded fiberglass chair but designer Asa Pingree shows that there are so many forms that can take shape with this material. His new fiberglass collection is inspired by his past as the son of a boatbuilder on an island off the coast of Maine. In designing a lounge chair, bench, ottoman, and daybed, Pingree explores the relationship between shape and balance as each piece is extremely sturdy yet light in form.

The result is the Hug Chair, which debuted this week at designjunction during the London Design Festival
a modern chair made using a traditional type of weaving. While the Hug Chair utilizes the traditional weaving material, they’ve achieved creating a modern design that feels perfectly balanced and timeless. The British-made design has launched with a dining and lounge chair version

Radiolaria #1 Chair Mimics the Intricacies of Microscopic Organisms

“Nature may seem at first glance random and free-flowing, but if you look on a microscopic level, you can find symmetry and geometry in almost all cell structures.” The salient observation about the natural world’s smallest lifeforms provides designer Lilian van Daal the framework for exploring the functional forms of unicellular micro-organisms and turning it into, Radiolaria #1, a most unique 3D printed chair made with 100% recycled polymer powder pieces without a drop of glue.
Designer van Daal’s careful observation of the intricacies of flowers and the mycelium networks of fungi, alongside the symmetrical of skeletal structures of Radiolaria and Bryozoa zooplankton all provided inspiration for a 3D printed seating solution assembled into a lattice – sans any requirement of glue. Each polymer piece is made of recycled polyamide/PA 12 developed by 3D printing company, Oceanz, providing not only flexible strength, but also requiring less material for manufacturing.

Contract furniture tends to be fairly expensive and costs can add up for small businesses every time they add an employee or two or need to reconfigure their setup. Plus, with more companies moving towards open plan offices and some on the move frequently as their businesses grow, it’s important for them to invest in furniture that’s flexible or multi-functional. That said, we went out on a hunt to find some practical furniture options for the office that can either pull double duty or are flexible so they be used in different ways.
Heartwork’s SQUARE desk system can be reconfigured into endless variations of workstations, conference tables, and even as a ping pong table. It’s designed so that it can easily be put together or taken apart with only a quarter – so, if you don’t need it for a spell, it can be stored flat. You can also choose

Modular, Bauhaus-Inspired Seating by POOL for Petite Friture

Parisian design studio POOL first designed a daybed and then decided to expand the idea into a modular, Bauhaus-inspired collection of seating for French brand Petite Friture. The GRID contract series includes various modules – two-seat sofa, armchairs, corner armchairs, chairs, a stool, and a coffee table – that can be arranged into all kinds of configurations to suit just about any lobby, reception area, office space, and even residential situations.
The GRID modules can be attached to one another so larger configurations stay together. It’s designed to allow as many or as few components to go together as needed for the space. Each piece consists of black tubular steel legs that hold a strapped wooden base, topped off with upholstered square and rounded cushions.

Cinch Minimalist Chair by Box Clever and French Furniture

Cinch is a minimalist chair designed by San Francisco-based studio Box Clever and Melbourne-based French Furniture. The chair was designed specifically to be shipped flat, and can be assembled and disassembled without tools. Its most notable feature is the belt element that secures the assembled chair.
The chair consists of eight components and can be easily assembled in four steps. The user first connects the legs onto the cross brace. Once completed, the seat can be attached and locked into the cross brace. The backrest pins onto the leg uprights, and the belt cinches around the legs to keep the components firmly in place. The chair comes in two variations, natural and black, with the natural variation being made of sustainably forested American white oak, while the black variation uses reclaimed merbau, which is then hand finished and stained with a black protective coat.

ecoBirdy Creates Kid’s Furniture Made From Old Plastic Toys

Plastic continues to be a growing problem around the world, and while more is being done to reduce consumption (think drinking straws and plastic bags), it seems like one genre hasn’t quite caught up – children’s toys. It’s almost impossible to go to anyone’s home that has children and not spot a dozen oversized plastic toys that parent’s hate and kids love, or take a stroll down the toy row at your closest big box store and see that 90% of the options are ugly plastic. Longing to do something about it, two Antwerp-based designers spent two years exploring ways to sustainably recycle old plastic toys and the result is ecoBirdy. The new European brand crafts really cool design pieces for kids that are made using 100% recycled plastic waste from unused toys.

Leather is typically used to upholster pieces of furniture but Toru uses the material itself for backrests and seats on chairs and stools. Each piece is handmade by local craftsman using the highest quality of leather that’s tanned with chestnut, mimosa, and quebracho extracts, which helps keep the original raw look and color of the material.
Babu is a floor-based chair that was inspired by travel. The easy-to-move design is made with sheets of leather and brass and it offers a spot to relax and meditate. The Clop lounge chair features three legs and a folded leather back that was inspired by the simplicity of a clog shoe – half wood and half leather. The Clop table chair is much like the

The WEEK-END collection is a range of outdoor furniture designed by Studio BrichetZiegler for Petite Friture. The oval shapes of the backrests are filled with horizontal slats that are juxtaposed with the connected vertical slats to become the seat of the chair. The collection makes an overall graphic statement with the perpendicular stripes and the negative spaces they create.
The WEEK-END collection consists of 3 stacking chairs, including the Chair, Armchair, and Bridge, the stacking Bench, stacking High Stool, and multiple tables, including the Coffee Table, Square Table, 2 Rectangular Tables, and a High Bar Table. Basically everything you’d need to create various setups for any outdoor space. Each piece is lacquered aluminum and is available in five colors: Black, White, Ultramarine Blue, Matt bordeaux, and Yellow. Photos by Ola Rindal.
