The oval shapes of the backrests are filled with horizontal slats that are juxtaposed with the connected vertical slats to become the seat of the chair. The collection makes an overall graphic statement with the perpendicular stripes and the negative spaces they create.
The WEEK-END collection consists of 3 stacking chairs, including the Chair, Armchair, and Bridge, the stacking Bench, stacking High Stool, and multiple tables, including the Coffee Table, Square Table, 2 Rectangular Tables, and a High Bar Table. Basically everything you’d need to create various setups for any outdoor space. Each piece is lacquered aluminum and is available in five colors: Black, White, Ultramarine Blue, Matt bordeaux, and Yellow. Photos by Ola Rindal.

They’re breaking the collection down into three time periods – 50-60s, 70-80s, and the 90-00s – which will launch on three separate dates in 2018. Each period is quite different but you’ll get a peek into IKEA’s past through its 7+ decades in business.
The 50-60s Edition launches this month with a series of classic pieces in darker woods that were a reflection of the times. The triangular LÖVBACKEN became the company’s first flat-packed product after an IKEA worker thought to remove a table’s legs to get it into his tiny car. Launching in October, the colorful 70-80s Edition is

Stein Wang and Topher Kong joined forces to establish Hi Thanks Bye, a design studio based in Toronto, Canada, and the duo is set to launch their inaugural collection – Collection 0 – next month at the London Design Fair. The collaboration brings forth a combination of “cultural and academic experiences and references” that the designers fleshed out to create their own collection of modern furnishings. The debut inspiration comes from a merging of Canadian landscapes with a Chinese aesthetic that results in a cohesive, six-piece collection of functional and versatile pieces.
The designers looked to their homeland of Canada with all of its natural beauty, like Algonquin Park, the Bruce Peninsula, and Fogo Island, and wanted to showcase that in the collection. They also found inspiration in traditional Chinese gardens that are full of rocks, plants, water, and structures. The monochromatic collection is made from powder-coated stainless steel

Moving is both backbreaking and expensive, so anytime you can move something yourself, it’s the smart way to roll. The Equant Suspension Lamp is as much a work of art as it is a functional fixture. Its unique form comes from the multiple elements that make it up: the half sphere that houses an LED light, the adjustable circular deflector that helps diffuse the light when swiveled, the black metal disc that holds the deflector in place, and the incomplete circular structure that holds it all together. The initials in the S.V. Side Table stands for Solid/Void, referencing the two halves of

The program is comprised of a sponsored class, where students learn how to design and build a chair, and the competition itself. There was one winning designer and five runners-ups from this year’s program. Joseph Goodwin was this year’s winner for his design “Tool for Translation,” which turns the complex pop icon of the chainsaw into a chair. The chair represents competing ideologies in politics and debates because it poses the question, where does the tree’s life end and where does the chair’s life begin? Holey Blue by Kincaid Pearson is

Fresh Egg Pasta Inspired Damian Williamson’s Ovo Chair for Erik Jørgensen

There’s something poetic happening when you see a chef making fresh pasta, rolling out sheets of dough to be cut into strips for your favorite dish. British designer Damian Williamson shares a similar sentiment. He decided to translate this nonchalant expression, when fresh egg pasta is draped over an extra-large wooden rolling pin, into an easy chair and designed the leather Ovo for Erik Jørgensen (the name is derived from the Italian word uovo which means egg).
The Ovo’s fluid design is due to the upholstery of the backrest and armrest that have been folded in the same way pasta is. The squared steel frame that holds up the chair shows off the chair’s soft curvature, similar to the fluid perimeter of pasta. The same steel frame is used to connect the back and front of the chair, continuing the playful integration between leather and steel.

While GAN has largely been known for their playful rugs and modular seating options, they’re expanding with the launch of their first outdoor collection with the hope of bringing indoor comfort to the outdoors. The Garden Layers collection, designed by Patricia Urquiola, was inspired by a visit to India and traditional Mughal culture and architecture. The gardens and terraces she saw jumpstarted the idea and the result is a series of rugs, mats, pillows, cushions, and the just released Indian beds and side tables to round things out.
The modular components are designed to be moved around to create the ultimate outdoor living room, with the bed offering additional comfort raised off the ground.
