Kjær’s goal was to design a line of furniture that felt like a natural extension of the architecture surrounding it, paying careful attention to scale so it felt balanced. She also placed importance on designing the furniture so that it would last in the outdoors through rain, wind, sun, and snow. Indoor-Outdoor comes in solid teak that will age beautifully and it requires very little maintenance. The collection includes a dining chair, lounge chair, two-seater lounge sofa, swing sofa, a sunbed,

“Carl Hansen was started in Odense by my grandfather,” Knud Erik Hansen explained. “He felt the best way to support a big family was to have his own business, so from the minute he had finished his apprenticeship, he started. He wanted to supply a first-class product at a decent price, and people liked him, so he was quite successful – he built up a nice business.” That was in 1908 – and over 100 years later Carl Hansen and Søn is still dedicated to making first-class products at a decent price. The company achieves that today in the same way its founder did a century ago, by combining traditional cabinet-making techniques with the most up-to-date machinery of the day.

Carl Hansen & Søn Reintroduces Hans J. Wegner’s Reversible Tray Table

Carl Hansen & Søn Reintroduces Hans J. Wegner’s Reversible Tray Table Carl Hansen & Søn is bringing back Hans J. Wegner’s reversible tray table that was first introduced back in 1970. The flexible, CH417 table is made up of two parts – a collapsible base and a round tray top – that allow it to be used as a coffee table or as a tray. Wegner-Reversible-Tray-Table-Carl-Hansen-2 The tray top has an integrated handle on one side that’s not only functional, but it adds a detail that Wegner was known for. Wegner-Reversible-Tray-Table-Carl-Hansen-3 The tabletop is reversible and comes in two options – white and black laminate surfaces or veneer surfaces in light and smoked oak. Both feature light oak for the tray rim and a smoked oak handle. The base is made of stainless steel. The Relaunched Metropolitan Chair from Carl Hansen & Son

The Relaunched Metropolitan Chair from Carl Hansen & Son While not as well known as some of their contemporaries, designers Ejner Larsen and Aksel Bender Madsen still had the skill set and eyes of top-notch designers. First presented in 1949 at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Furniture Exhibition, the Metropolitan Chair is undoubtedly Danish with a classic feel that can hold its own with all of the more acknowledged icons. The chair is finally getting its due after Carl Hansen & Son chose to relaunch it in late 2014. Metropolitan-Chair-LM92-Carl-Hansen-1a The Metropolitan Chair (LM92) is now available in solid oak or walnut legs with a leather saddle seat and backrest in either natural, cognac, or black. A Sculptural Lounge Chair Designed for Dreaming

A Sculptural Lounge Chair Designed for Dreaming

Famed Japanese architect Tadao Ando partnered with Carl Hansen & Søn to design a sculptural lounge chair that pays tribute to Hans J. Wegner. The Dream Chair combines Danish craftsmanship with traditional Japanese design and is meant to encourage people to spend more time dreaming. Yes, please.

A Sculptural Lounge Chair Designed for Dreaming in home furnishings Category

Ando, like Wegner did, likes exploring the possibilities of materials and what is possible structurally. The curvy Dream Chair pushes the boundaries when it comes to designing with wood and what it can do. The beauty of the three-dimensional plywood used is that it can be curved along two axles while it’s being molded giving it its shape.

From Ando:

I have been an admirer of Wegner’s craftsmanship for many years. This collaboration with Carl Hansen & Søn made it possible for me to create a piece of furniture from the ground up with the help of a team of skilled professionals.

The Dream Chair is available in either oak or walnut without upholstery, or with fabric or leather upholstery on the front side and and adjustable neck support.

Wishbone Chair by Hans J. Wegner for Carl Hansen & Søn

Wishbone Chair by Hans J. Wegner for Carl Hansen & Søn

Even if you’re not a design fanatic and don’t know its name, chances are you’ve seen or even sat in the Wishbone Chair. In production for over 60 years, this classic dining chair, designed by Danish designer Hans J. Wegner for Carl Hansen & Søn, is simple in design but handmade with the finest craftsmanship possible. Celebrated for its clean lines and straightforward style, this piece of modern design history will never go out of style. In this month’s Deconstruction, we’re lucky enough to get a behind-the-scenes look at how this iconic chair has been made since 1950.

Hans J. Wegner, pictured here in an early Wishbone construction, designed the model in 1949 as one of his very first designs for Carl Hansen & Son.

Since its production began in 1950, the Wishbone Chair has been made with the same 14 parts which require 100 separate processes and approximately 3 weeks of preparation. Here we see a deconstructed look at the parts which comprise the Wishbone chair.

In an early workshop of Carl Hansen, this photo shows the beginning stages of the same production process of the Wishbone Chair that has been ongoing since 1950. Here, a worker is sanding the semi-circular back of the chair.

The Y part of the back of the chair which gives it its wishbone shape is chiseled in this photo. Made of strong laminated plywood, the Y is then fit into a groove and attached to the back of the chair.

As the pieces are affixed to the structure, the Wishbone continues to take shape. The structure is hand-sanded after the pieces are delicately attached to one another using only glue.

Weaving is one of the final processes of the Wishbone’s construction. Each of the Wishbone chair seats is hand-woven. This close-up image shows the weaver maneuvering the paper cord, which is incredibly strong and has a life cycle of approximately 50 years.

The paper cord that makes up the seating is available in white, natural or black. Here is an example of a model with black paper cord. In all, nearly 400 feet of paper cord are used in each Wishbone construction.
