Sergison Bates & Jean-Paul Jaccaud - Social housing and nursery, Geneva 2011. The new building seeks to reconcile the disjointed fabric of the historic block. The mass weaves in and out to connect the plots adjacent buildings, and is broken up vertically with a podium level in reaction to nearby building heights. The thickened concrete facade is specially mixed to tonally respond to the context, structurally supports the building, and creates a sense of shelter for the residents. Brass windows within add additional warmth to the units. Various pathways and circulation routes are carved out to ensure there is permeability both at the public urban level, and to encourage community interaction at the residential levels. Like most projects out of the office, the building is a highly articulated, understated design that is the result of a highly considered relationship between the occupants and their urban context. Via, photos (C) Alain Grandchamp.
