Text description provided by the architects. By chance the client found Xu Xujun two years ago. After a few hours' communication at the first meeting, the client requested that Xu Xujun provide a brief proposal first. At that night, Xu Xujun drew a rough draft by hand: elements of Oriental Zen were added to the overlapping connected buildings , and Tibetan style of ancient city Shangri-La was taken as a smooth transition, thus a simple hostel which presents the beauty of nature was gradually shown. The client thought highly of the draft, thus a story about the original design of KARESANSUI was unfolded...

Text description provided by the architects. Destruction is the prelude to renovation. The wall was then replaced with a glass and ironwork partition, allowing natural light into the rooms. What had been an aging townhouse soon became a totally brand new home. Winding gray ironwork extends upward to connect the soul of all five floors of the townhouse in one fell swoop. The custom-made gray handrail ironwork sometimes bends and folds, while other times it is higher or lower or combines with a partition.

Managing Place (composition)
Architecture is by no means autonomous. On the contrary, it provides a place for human existence. Place is formed by the relationships between building with the environment, with other buildings, and with people. Architecture becomes an overall layout, the inspiration of which comes from dialogues—dialogues between the mountain, water,

When strong visual impact and artificial details prevail in postmodern city, how can we integrate residence within city’s richness and exhibit exquisiteness of life without artificialness?

© Yao Li © Yao Li

The so-called richness is essence of city, while delicateness is related to preciseness and accuracy of design. In the collision of classic and modern, part and whole, we always try to infuse richness, delicateness into design, to merge every living entity within city’s richness and to appreciate the urban charm within one community.

OPEN Architecture Creates “Disappearing” Stone Installation for Marmomac Festival

At international stone exhibition Marmomac 2017, Chinese firm OPEN Architecture has created a transient installation titled "The Eternal & The Ephemeral" that allows visitors to transform a cube of stone tiles into new, unplanned forms. The project responds directly to the theme of the event, "Soul of City," which asked designers from across the globe to collaborate with Italian stone manufacturers to create pieces built entirely from stone. OPEN's concept focused on the relationship between transience and heaviness in the material, prompting the installation to gradually "disappear" over the 4-day event.

In a modern city like Shanghai, Places of residence and places of work hardly ever coincide. As a newly established design practice, architects from Atelier Tao+C confronted a need of combining living and working in one place with low cost. On the ground floor of an anonymous 80s housing, we found a small residence with obsolete interior furnishings, the plot is narrow and long, measures 3.3 x 14.5 meters, with a backyard less than 6 sqm.
