Textile designer Madeline Weinrib wasn’t a very good student until an art teacher recognized and supported her talent. After a successful stint as a fine artist, she transitioned to textiles. Architect Dan Brunn was born in Tel Aviv and moved to Los Angeles at age 7. The architectural contrast between the two cities made a deep impression and informed his life’s direction. Despite a language barrier, he made friends though the universal language of drawing cars and sharing new, exotic snacks. A guidance counselor once tried to convince him that he wouldn’t amount to anything. He’s proved that wrong by 1000%. Now, when he’s not staring down a mountain lion, he’s choreographing exquisite spaces.

Beyond just the trade show, there’s been an expansion of exciting offsite shows and events surrounding IDS that demonstrate the growth of this design scene.
We sponsored The Mix, alongside LA Design Festival, which paired an LA designer with a Vancouver-based designer resulting in some great conversation and exhibitions offsite and some beautiful vignettes on the trade show floor. Featuring Hinterland (Van) x Bari Ziperstein (LA) and Ben Barber (Van) x Another Human (LA). Beautiful and fun cardboard booth space by Matthew McCormick. I loved the Finnish design booth, curated by Susanna Björklund, titled “What the HEL from Finland“! This particular bathroom vignette in the DXV-powered Open Studio / Retreat area was my favorite. She indulged in sewing lessons and endured charm school until she found wood shop class and fit right in. After years as a shop teacher, a motorcycle accident catalyzed the launch of her namesake brand. Shortly thereafter she also founded Address, an annual exhibit of designer / makers in her hometown of Vancouver, which dovetails nicely with another one of her talents: throwing a good party.

Let me break Neoculture down for you to easily digest— attitudinal and societal shifts like population growth, increase in ridesharing, public transportation, and renting over owning, globalization over nationalization, sustainability, and reliance on technology are all contributing to Neoculture. The Art Institute Chicago is showing an outstanding exhibition – Georg Jensen: Scandinavian Design for Living – now through September 9th. The exhibition looks back at the history of the brand and over 100 works in silver, including some of the brand’s most iconic designs that helped define modern tableware and serving ware. We spoke to SVP Nicholas Manville about the exhibition, and had an exclusive tour, resulting in a video that captures the highlights of the exhibit. Watch:
Special thanks to Georg Jensen and Art Institute Chicago for making this video possible.

I’ve been lazy, I’ll admit, about posting about all the new jewelry we’ve been adding to Adorn Milk. It’s been ages since I shared the beautiful new pieces we’ve launched in the shop, so it’s time to stock up on adornments for your new Fall look (or get an early start on holiday gift shopping!).
We’ve added a brand new collection of concrete brooches and necklaces from Material Immaterial Studio. Architectural forms, textures, and materials, the modulation of light, shade, and color, all combine to inject a spirit that articulates space. This construct filled with architectural elements that defy gravity and the natural laws of space force the viewer to perceive reality in new ways – A Paradox. A Chimera. The collection is created by architectural elements coming together to form illusory perspectives, a sensory mirage of spaces for the mind, defining a new paradigm in design. The idea

I was very honored this year to be a judge for the 2nd Annual Fantini Design Awards, alongside Stefano Giussani, Lissoni Inc., and Arianne Nardo, Robb Report. There were so many beautiful projects that the judging was really hard! I was envious of every beautiful bath and kitchen space in the submissions, but the judges finally settled on the following winners (congrats!):
5th Ave. Loft
Andrew Pollock Architect, PC renovated and designed a New York City loft overlooking the Flatiron building and Madison Square Park. The inspiration for each of the three bathrooms came from different 20th century landmark buildings, which are visible outside each window. Durable, yet luxurious materials were chosen for the walls, surfaces and fixtures to represent the timeless nature of the surrounding city. The bathrooms were designed to be very open, meaning each fixture could be easily viewed. Boffi & Fantini’s Aboutwater AF/21 Fukasawa

We’ve teamed up with Colony, the NY-based community of independent furniture, lighting, textiles and objects designers, for a fun road trip to explore the United States in the name of design, discovery and inspiration. In the upcoming season, Colony Founder and Curator Jean Lin and the Colony team will travel through an itinerary of cities and burgeoning design communities across the US seeking new expressions of American design, art and craft—making stops in cities such as Detroit, MI; Nashville, TN; Jackson, WY and more, in search of the most exciting new talent that the great expanse of our country has to offer. Their adventures and discoveries will be chronicled here on Design Milk.
Are you based in any of these cities or do you know someone there that we should visit? Designers and artists along the tour route can submit their work through submissions@goodcolony.com to set up an
