Architect and founding partner of experimental design studio The Principals, Drew Seskunas grew up surfing, getting arrested for skateboarding and navigating the social divide between jocks and artists. In high school, a documentary on Frank Lloyd Wright piqued his interest and set him on course to architecture school. Within a decade, he was building a large public project in Berlin while struggling to argue in German. Now, he’s creating interactive and mind-bending environments that shift perspectives. Listen:

The exhibition also included a program of conversations about design with de Castelbajac, as well as representatives from Fermob, Ligne Roset USA and designers like Valérie Maltaverne, Julie Richoz, and Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance. Editor-At-Large has the scoop:

Patcraft Explores Process, Texture, and Creativity Underfoot

The following post is brought to you by Patcraft. Our partners are hand-picked by the Design Milk team because they represent the best in design.

When you enter a space—office, home, museum, school, wherever—you may not immediately take note of the flooring. But Patcraft is always thinking about it: from experimenting with oxidation of metals, exploring the juxtaposition of matte and gloss, and reinterpreting the texture and grains of wood, there’s no shortage of innovation and creativity underfoot, so you might be missing something if you don’t look down. They’ve released not one, but five new commercial flooring collections at this year’s NeoCon.
We were drawn in by the unique process that they used to create their new Artefact collection, and then became enthralled with the innovation and interesting techniques the Patcraft team used in both their design and printing processes for all five collections.

Choosing a career in jewelry wasn’t Ella’s first choice growing up. “I was always quite creative in school, got high grades in artistic subjects but was also quite academic at the same time,” she says. However, when it came time to do her exams, Ella found herself losing interest in a more scholarly path. “For A-Levels I did all sciences and failed them all,” she laughs. “Because I just had no interest in any of that.” After taking a year out Ella found the idea of making jewelry appealing and chose to leave her home-base of Cornwall and move to London for an apprenticeship. All that input served to make him feel at home anywhere in the world and yet, in a quasi-rebellious sort of way, instilled in him the desire to create something original. His childhood was both blessed by love and privilege and cursed by bullying and attempts to invalidate his creativity—a recipe for gratitude, perspective, and turbo drive to disprove the naysayers. In this episode of Clever, Amy and Jaime talk to architect Barbara Bestor, whose childhood memories involve Brutalist architecture and purple carpeted stairs. Now she’s thinking a lot about urban density and the 2028 Olympics. Listen:
